Mount Saint Michael Sets High Bar for Success

Mount Saint Michael Academy, an all-boys, college-preparator y school situated on a 22-acre campus in the Bronx, was establishe­d and conducted by the Marist Brothers in 192. It encourages all its students to “live with a heart that knows no bounds,” in adherence to the teachings of the order’s founder, St. Marcellin.

Mount St. Michael Academy is recognized as a Blue Rib - bon School of excellence by the U.S. Department of Education and an Outstandin­g American High School by U. S. News & World Report. Its mission is to educate young men to become academical­ly prepared through the foundation of a challengin­g curriculum in a well-discipline­d and safe environmen­t, while developing a moral commitment to the service of others.

“We talk about success a lot here,” says Brother Steve Schlitte, the academy’s principal. “I think that’s one of the reasons our students excel.”

The academy has a thriving college-prep honors program and nine Advanced Placement courses. In addition, the Champagnat Scholars Program identifies accelerate­d student s at the eighth-grade l evel and fast tracks them, starting their freshmen year, toward obtaining admission to top-tier colleges and universiti­es.

Leadership training, outdoor education and service requiremen­ts are elements of the program introduced to ensure each s student receives a well-rounded e education.

“The goal is that by the time t they graduate, they’ll have taken the nine AP classes we offer and b begin college with 18 credits,” B Br. Schlitte says.

The Mount proudly launched it its sports medicine academy in S September of 2012. This groundbrea­king program fuses athletic and advanced science to prepare participat­ing students f for collegiate sports medicine p programs at the university level. T The program’s chief advisor is D Dr. Anthony Maddalo (‘72), an o orthopedic surgeon in Yonkers, N N.Y. and team doc tor for the New York Rangers and Manhattan College.

Almost 800 students attend Mt. St. Michael, and it consistent­ly sees 100% college acceptance of its graduating classes. Every student complete s 10 0 hours of ser vice as a graduation requiremen­t as well.

Students regularly work on ser vice projects within their Bronx communitie­s and with national organizati­ons such as Habitat for Humanity.

The academy also places empha sis on ex tracurricu­lar activities. Over 75% of the student body is involved in at least one club or athletic team. Baseball, basketball, football, hockey, lacrosse, soccer and track are all of fered at Mt. St. Michael, a s well as cultural clubs, National Honor Society, student council and drama club.
