St. Barnabas High School
According to Sr. Joan Faraone, RJM, principal, "Saint Barnabas High School is a great place for a young woman to maximize her academic potential, to forge friendships that last a lifetime, to discover her talents and skills and to prepare for a leadership role in her school, church and civic community." The school's small, family like environment and diverse student body offer an opportunity for personal relationships within the cultural mosaic that is New York City, the country and the world.
The high school's three-tiered academic program is designed to meet the needs and interests of every student. Curriculum is focused on ways to support every learner, including honors students, those who demonstrate average ability and those who need extra help. Students also have access to a facility with gym, auditorium/chapel, cafeteria, newly renovated library, state-of-theart technology centers and science labs that rival the offerings of larger schools. All of this is offered in a safe neighborhood where students can stay after school to participate in extracurricular activities.
The school's focus on academics has given it t an outstanding record of college accepaccep tances and university scholarships. Utilizing the New York State Regents Curriculum, Saint Barnabas High School has created a curriculum that both challenges students and helps them prepare for their transition to college. Honors classes and portfolio assessments provide challenging materials and the necessary feedback for students to grow intellectually. The school also offers online college courses credited by Marist College and Mercy College to give students a head start when transitioning to prestigious universities such as New York University, Hofstra University, Columbia University and others.
Additionally, St. Barnabas High School provides internship opportunities for selected seniors in the fields of medicine, law and education to help students gain experience in the career of their choice.
According to high school senior Nirvannie Goberdan, who has been interning at Montefiore Hospital this past year, "participating in the internship program while attending St. Barnabas High School helps you make good connections for the future and understand what it is like to pursue the career for your choice. It is definitely an experience you will never forget."
