A Loving Foundation for Learning at Christ the King

-

Christ the King School on the Grand Concourse in the Bronx is a tight-knit community. “Many of our students are the children of former students,” says Lenora Yzaguirre, the school’s former principal.

Yzaguirre worked at the school for 39 years and says teacher turnover is very low in general. Current Principal Tara Braswell says, “Each year the students come to school with challenges, but with experience, our teachers help those challenges become accomplishments.

Christ the King offers Universal pre-K through eighth-grade classes. The preK students have to be in school by 7:45 a.m., no later than 8 a.m. The UPK program begins from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Students can stay for the wrap- around program from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Kindergarten through eighth grade is in school by 7:20 a.m. for breakfast and early drop off. Dismissal for everyone is at 3 p.m.

The school has a variety of extracurricular activities, such as a basketball team, girls and boys intramural, art club, step team, cheerleading and yearbook. Christ the King School offers afterschool care from 3– 6 p.m. The students are instructed to complete homework, and once homework is completed, students are engaged in creative activities involving reading and math.

For students who may need extra help Christ the King offers English language learner assistance, as well as remedial reading and math. A guidance counselor provides additions support for children and families and for high school application process.

At the end of the day it’s the commitment on the part of the staff and faculty that really sets Christ the King apart and makes it a uniquely warm, loving atmosphere, where students excel academically while learning to live a life that embraces Catholic values. “We embrace all children and their families with open arms to be a part of our wonderful community,” says Ms. Braswell.
