Sanchez’s arm is on the Mark
INDIANAPOLIS − Mark Sanchez’s future with the Jets remains uncertain, but all indications are that his surgically repaired throwing shoulder won’t preclude him from finding a new home if he hits the open market.
Sanchez is throwing with “good velocity” in Southern California four months after going under the knife, according to a source familiar with the quarterback’s rehab program.
General manager John Idzik and Rex Ryan wouldn’t confirm on Thursday whether Sanchez had even started throwing yet, but the Daily News has learned that Sanchez is able to make downfield passes at this point as he makes his way back from the season-ending injur y suffered in the third week of the preseason.
It’s a good sign for Sanchez, who has a $13.1 million salary cap charge in 2014 and is expected to be released before his $2 million payment is due in late March. Ryan gave a lukewarm sign of support for Sanchez on Thursday, saying that he would like Sanchez back … just like he would like all his players back. “Let’s just let it play out,” Ryan said about Sanchez’s future with the Jets. “I always want guys back. … (Would) I want him back? Absolutely. Would I want all my guys back? You guys know my answer. You know how I feel about my players. That’s just the way it is.” Idzik praised Sanchez’s desire to return to pre-injury form on Thursday, but offered no details about his progress. The Jets were scheduled to meet with the Sanchez camp at the NFL scouting combine on Friday.
