Lincoln Center brings ‘world-class art’ to S. Bronx families
Avenerable community organization is bringing a bit of Lincoln Center to the South Bronx.
Every Saturday afternoon through June 13, Casita Maria Center for Arts & Education is presenting a series of music, dance, poetry and other fine arts for Bronx families, courtesy of Lincoln Center’s new Boro-Linc initiative.
Boro-Linc, which began in March, is meant to give underserved children and families a way to experience what Lincoln Center has to offer — for free.
“Our belief is that every New Yorker is entitled to world-class art, but some of them who may have barriers in coming to our Upper Manhattan campus are now being given access to that art,” says Russell Granet, Executive Director of Lincoln Center Education.
“The idea is, ‘How do you create artgoing habits?’ So each event prompts families to talk about it when they go home at night.”
The goal, he adds, “is to provide opportunities for parents and children to get into the habit of seeing art together and want to come back every week to see more, instead of it being an isolated experience.”
Among the upcoming performances and kid-friendly activities are events covering Latin music in the early sound era, movement workshops for children ages 4 to 12, and an introduction to opera via Mozart’s “The Magic Flute.”
“It’s nice for families to be able to go somewhere on a Saturday for free and be in a casual environment that’s different than Lincoln Center,” says Sarah Calderon, Casita Maria’s executive director. “It’s a really good bonding experience.” For more info on Boro-Linc events, go to casitamaria.org.
