Something Bruin for Jets
Gang holds workout for UCLA QB Hundley
THE JETS’ seemingly endless search for a franchise quarterback has them looking everywhere to upgrade at the game’s most important position.
The Daily News has learned that the team held a private workout for UCLA quarterback Brett Hundley four weeks ago. There are questions about whether the 6-3, 226-pound Hundley can make the transition from a spread college system to a conventional pro-style offense, but his athleticism is intriguing. Hundley, UCLA’s all-time leader in touchdowns and total yards, had 10 rushing TDs in 13 games last season.
ESPN analyst and quarterbacks guru Jon Gruden described Hundley as a “football junkie” with traits similar to former Eagle Donovan McNabb.
The Jets are in the market for someone who can at the very least compete with Geno Smith and Ryan Fitzpatrick. The team held a private workout for Marcus Mariota in Oregon recently and sent key decision-makers to Jameis Winston’s Pro Day last week.
New head coach Todd Bowles said last week in a conference call with Jets season-ticket holders that the team “(hopes) to add somebody else to help compete with” the top two quarterbacks on the depth chart.
TALKING PRESEASON
Overeager Jets fans can already imagine the tantalizing matchup between Calvin Johnson and Darrelle Revis in Week 1 . . . of the preseason. The league announced preseason schedules on Thursday. Game times and exact dates will be released sometime in the next two weeks.
The Jets will open their preseason in Detroit against the Lions. They’ll face the Falcons at home next in a matchup of the Jets’ top two coaching choices, Bowles and Dan Quinn. They’ll play the annual Snoopy Bowl game next as the road team against the Giants. They’ll finish the slate against the Eagles at home.
Summer opponents are also set for the Giants, who open their preseason slate at Cincinnati. That will take place sometime between Aug. 13-17.
Tom Coughlin’s old team, the Jacksonville Jaguars, comes to MetLife Stadium in Week 2 (Aug. 20-24). The Giants and Jets will play in Week 3 (Aug. 27-30), as they always do.
The preseason finale takes place likely on Thurs., Sept. 3, when the Giants travel to Foxborough to face the Patriots.
The regular-season schedule is expected to be released later in April.
