Giant punter kicks on 2 of Eagles’ QBs
IF THEY HADN’T done so already, the Eagles have probably circled Oct. 19 on their calendars after Giants punter Steve Weatherford fired the latest salvos in the trash-talk heavy rivalry on Friday.
The first of the two Giants-Eagles matchups in 2015 will be a Monday Night Football game in Week 6. Nobody truly knows who the Eagles’ starting quarterback will be that night, or who it will even be at the start of the season, and Weatherford gave brutally honest opinions Friday on Philadelphia’s quarterback situation during the “Boomer and Carton Show” on WFAN.
Target No. 1: ex-Jet Tim Tebow, whom the Eagles signed this spring. Weatherford praised Tebow as a person, but essentially slammed his quarterback skills.
“I’m the biggest Tim Tebow fan in the world,” Weatherford said. “I mean, who wouldn’t want their daughter to date a guy like that? I’ll tell you what, I don’t want him taking snaps for my team.”
Tebow hasn’t played a regular-season game since 2012 with the Jets. He was with the Patriots during the 2013 preseason but was released at the end of August.
Weatherford then took aim at Sam Bradford, the oft-injured quarterback whom the Eagles acquired in a trade this offseason for signal caller Nick Foles. He seemed to admire Bradford’s talent but believes he’s unreliable.
“I’m gonna give you a Ferrari that maybe won’t be running all the time, or I’m giving you a nice Cadillac sedan,” the punter said, referring to former Jet and current Eagles QB Mark Sanchez as the Cadillac.
“It’s not the fastest but you know what you’re going to get out of it. Bradford can go from zero to 60 in three seconds, but you don’t know if he’s gonna start up some days,” Weatherford added.
The final zinger came when Weatherford addressed the idea of the Eagles extending Bradford’s contract. “Good luck with that,” he said. “Chip Kelly will get himself in serious trouble if they get an extension for that guy, and (if) he gets hurt? He’s done.”
NO FLY ZONE
The Giants did not obtain the proper clearance for their recent use of a drone during minicamp, which raised the eyebrows of the Federal Aviation Administration.
According to a Bloomberg News report, the FAA is looking into the use of drones by the Giants, as well as the Cowboys and Patriots. It’s illegal to fly an unmanned aircraft for commercial purposes without getting an FAA waiver unless it is being used indoors or is operated by a contractor with FAA authorization. None of the three teams received such a waiver, the report said.
