HER CLOTHES ENCOUNTER

I dreamt I was shopping for beautiful clothes. Even though I bought some new clothing, I was uncertain about them. When I went in my closet, clothing started falling on my head, suffocating me. So I went into my daughter's room and found some chocolates there. I felt calm in this room. I dressed in the new clothes, left with a friend, and got caught in the rain. She took me into a house where needy people were being fed elegantly on china and silver. What does this all mean?

Donna Sirlin, Manhattan

Analysis: Shopping symbolizes a need for nurturing: the need to fill a void in one's life. The beautiful clothing that is bought provides protective cover from the external world. More importantly, it compensates for feelings of deficiency by enhancing or enlarging the persona. On one level you long for exposure, but on another level you run for cover. Uncertainty over self-presentation may be an issue. When societal expectations overwhelm, it is no wonder that chocolates offer calm and give fullness to an inner sense of deprivation.

A CLEAR DESIRE FOR CHANGE

I dreamt I was on a train with people from my neighborhood all trying to escape into another country or state. The train kept stopping for hours between short distances. Then I noticed that strangers had trapped us in by jamming the door. People on the train were being killed with knives one at a time, but I escaped with a couple of relatives, found a car and rode off to our destination. Please decode this dream.

Zethu Dludlu, Springs, South Africa

Analysis: The dream reveals dissatisfaction with a current state of affairs. A thwarted destination reveals the need to rethink ways to get where you need to be in life. Train destinations are often concerned with one's purpose, objectives and goals. As such, you need to transcend fears or worries over your life journey. There is a claustrophobic sense of being locked into a particular lifestyle, situation or mindset. Control issues necessitate taking things into your own hands.
