Tech unmasks 3 in fraud

THE MUGS on these suspected DMV fraudsters were no match for facial recognition technology.

In the first bistate bust using the face capturing software at the New York and New Jersey motor vehicle agencies, three men were arrested for using phony aliases, birthdays and Social Security numbers to get multiple licenses, the Daily News learned.

The New York Department of Motor Vehicles arrested Magdy El-Sheimy and Sekou Sidibe June 24 and Jhon Gomez July 9 for the alleged licensing scheme.

“Facial recognition has greatly enhanced our investigators’ ability to deter identity theft and identify subjects committing fraud,” DMV Division of Field Investigations Director Owen McShane said.

All three men held commercial licenses, according to the DMV.

El-Sheimy, 55, of Ridgefield Park, N.J., tried to get a hack license in New York under the name “Magdy H. Moustafa” in 2010, according to a complaint with the Manhattan district attorney’s office. The DMV accused him of splitting tickets and violations between his two licenses.

Sidibe, 53, is a driver in the Bronx with a New Jersey commercial license, while his alleged alter ego “Sidibe Sekou” in 2012 tried to get a New York license with a fake birthdate and Social Security number.

Gomez, meanwhile, is charged in Albany County with lying to the New York DMV about an impending license suspension for a DWI conviction in New Jersey.

Gomez and attorneys for ElSheimy and Sidibe could not be reached for comment.
