Jersey girl, 11, takes pride in her Yankees

We’ve all just grown up watching it together, so it’s like... just part of my family.

GAME NIGHT at the Deter household means only one thing: It’s Yankee time.

Fifth-grader Julie doesn’t get through an inning without calling at least one family member — probably her grandparents.

Even when not everyone can gather around the TV at the same time in the same house, the Deters stay in contact to discuss every home run, disputed call and double play.

“Even an error that will be on . . . ‘SportsCenter,’ ” said baseball enthusiast Julie in her winning essay about Yankee traditions for the Daily News’ Field of Dreams contest.

“I like to play baseball. I am on a team — the Comets,” Julie, of Colonia, N.J., who turned 11 this month, said in an interview.

She also likes basketball and dance — but thanks to her family traditions, baseball’s her favorite.

“I like the competitiveness of it, and I like knowing you are with your friends. It’s just cool,” said Julie, a catcher.

“We’ve all just grown up watching it together, so it’s like . . . just part of my family,” she said. Julie is one of nine contest winners who will take the field with a Yankee starter before the team’s Aug. 26 game against Houston at Yankee Stadium.

The contest entrants, ages 8 to 14, were judged on essays about what Yankee tradition means to them.
