Other notable players who switched leagues and where they finished in their new leagues’ award voting:

Hank Borowy, 1945

The Cubs purchased him from the Yankees on July 27 and Borowy enjoyed his new league, going 11-2 with a 2.13 ERA in 15 games. He finished sixth in NL MVP voting.

Sal Maglie, 1956

“The Barber” had been a hated New York Giant, but the Brooklyn Dodgers loved it when he pitched for them. Brooklyn purchased Maglie from Cleveland on May 15 and he was 13-5 with a 2.87 ERA, finishing second to new teammate Don Newcombe for both NL MVP and the Cy Young (there was only one chosen from both leagues then).

Rick Sutcliffe, 1984

“Sut” won the NL Cy Young Award after going 16-1 for the Cubs with a 2.69 ERA in 20 starts following a swap from Cleveland. He also finished fourth in the MVP vote.

Doyle Alexander, 1987

Alexander was 9-0 with a 1.53 ERA after the Tigers landed him from Atlanta in exchange for a young John Smoltz. Alexander was fourth in the AL Cy Young voting and 13th in MVP balloting.

Randy Johnson, 1998

Houston got him from Seattle and The Big Unit went 10-1 with a 1.28 ERA in 11 starts, finishing seventh in the NL Cy Young voting and 21st for MVP.

Carlos Beltran, 2004

Had a .926 OPS and 23 homers in 90 games for the Astros after a trade from Kansas City. He finished 12th in NL MVP voting.

Mark Teixeira, 2007 & 2008

Teixeira went from Texas to Atlanta in ‘07 and Atlanta to Anaheim in ‘08 and had an OPS of 1.020 and 1.081 in his secondhalf stops, respective­ly. But he only got recognized in MVP voting in ‘08, tying for 20th in AL balloting

Manny Ramirez, 2008

Finished fourth in NL voting after slugging .743 with 17 homers and 53 RBI in 53 games for Dodgers following trade from Boston.

CC Sabathia, 2008

After Milwaukee acquired him from Cleveland, Sabathia went 11-2 with a 1.65 ERA in 17 starts, finishing fifth in the NL Cy Young voting and sixth for MVP.
