Grand win for Wolves

- BY SEAN EGAN

KYLE BRISFERE caught a 10yard touchdown pass with only seconds left to lift visiting Grand Street Campus to a 26-22 win over Fort Hamilton in a PSAL City Conference game on Saturday. The Wolves rallied from a 14-0 halftime deficit.

Brisfere, a junior, had dropped a pass in the end zone early in the game, but redeemed himself with the winning grab.

“He came back and won the game on his fingertips,” Grand Street coach Bruce Eugene said.

Brisfere noted that his team had lost to Fort Hamilton by just four points two seasons ago, so he was happy to get revenge.

“The last time we played them it was tight like this game and it came out to a loss for us,” said Brisfere. “So this was a very emotional game for us.”

Eugene also credited Grand Street quarterback Chris Mattocks for coming back strong after a shaky first half. Eugene admitted he was hard on the quarterback, so he was impressed with how he recovered in the second half.

“He kept a cool head and came back in the second half to make some throws I don’t think many kids in the city could throw,” the coach said.

Grand Street also got a huge defensive play from Michael Charles. With three minutes left in the fourth quarter, Charles made a nifty interception after Grand Street had turned the ball over. The pick led to the Wolves’ winning drive. While Brisfere played a key role in the victory, he was more interested in talking up his team after the game than bragging about what he had done.

“We have to be the number one team,” Brisfere said of Grand Street, which lost in the semifinals of the playoffs last season. “If we want to win the championship we have to win as a team.”

Fort Hamilton coach Daniel Perez gave his opponent credit for coming back after the big halftime deficit.

“They kept grinding away,” Perez said.
