looking for? Lionel Richie debuted his eponymous Home Collection Tuesday at Gramercy Park, where he answered the age old question: Who had bigger Afros, os, his old band The Commodores or The Jackson 5?
“Jackson 5,” he conceded. In fact, Richie says the two bands once measured their hairdos to settle the issue once and for all — and Michael and his brothers won.
“It’s only because they had a little bit more youth on us,” says the 66-year-old singer. “That’s the only reason. When you have a competition with a 9, 10, 11-year-old (against) a 21-yearold, they’re going to beat you every time. They’re going to keep growing hair.”
Richie also told us that keeping up with his daughter Nicole, a former wild-child, kept his waistline skinny through the years. “I will give you
Nicole Richie as a daughter and you’re going to be thin too. Her teenage years through her early 20’s, damn near tried to kill me,” he joked. He’s hoping things will be easier with his pretty 17-year-old model daughter, Sofia.
“I have a gun... I am patrolling, ling,” he joked. “I told her, ‘Nic cole has already tried to k kill me. Go back and talk t to her and then don’t do t that. That’s all. Don’t do t that to me because I’m g getting older and weaker a as time goes on.’”
Richie’s idea of “shock” has app parently weakened with age too, as evidenced by the fact that he compares his home goods collection to recording hit songs.
“They were very shocked when I did ‘Three Times a Lady,’ a waltz in the middle of the funk and they were very shocked when I did ‘All Night Long,’ disco, so what do we do to shock again?” said Richie.
The collection is for sale online and expected to be available at high-end retailers this year.
The “Easy” singer likes to take things slow whether he’s home or abroad these days.
“I’m the guy who goes to Paris and instead of spending all day in clubs, I go to the bazaars and the fairs,” he said.
