RECENT USES

- — McCarron

Here is a look at some of the notable opt-out clauses in recent years: Alex Rodriguez: His 10-year, $252 million deal with the Rangers, signed after the 2000 season, contained an opt-out in 2007. Used it and re-signed with Yankees for 10 years, $275 million. Sammy Sosa: He could have opted out of his four-year, $72 million contract with the Cubs after the 2003 season but did not. J.D. Drew: Used an opt-out after two years with the Dodgers to sign a five-year, $70 million deal with Boston following the 2006 season. A.J. Burnett: Left two years and $24 million on the table in Toronto by using his opt-out to sign a five-year, $82.5 million deal with Yankees before the 2009 season. Vernon Wells: Signed a sevenyear, $126 million contract with the Blue Jays that had an opt-out after 2011, but he did not use it after hitting .218 with a .660 OPS for the Angels, keeping the three years, $63 million left. CC Sabathia: Before he could use the opt-out in his Yankee deal after 2011, the sides renegotiated an extension that essentially added $30 million and one year to the original pact. Rafael Soriano: His three-year, $35 million deal with the Yankees had two opt-outs and he triggered the one after the 2012 season. Zack Greinke: Opted out of his six-year, $147-million contract with the Dodgers in 2015 after three seasons and signed a sixyear, $206.5 million deal with Arizona. Masahiro Tanaka: Can opt-out of his seven-year, $155 million deal with the Yankees after 2017. Clayton Kershaw: His sevenyear, $215 million extension with the Dodgers includes an opt-out after 2018. Giancarlo Stanton: His backloaded $325 million extension has a post-2020 opt-out. David Price: The seven-year, $217 million pact he signed with Boston this winter has an opt-out after 2018. Jason Heyward: His new Cubs contract — $184 million over eight years — has two optouts — after the 2018 and 2019 seasons. Johnny Cueto: He can opt out of his new six-year, $130 million deal with the Giants after the 2017 season. Justin Upton: He can look elsewhere by triggering the post2017 season opt-out in his new six-year, $132.5 million pact with the Tigers. Yoenis Cespedes: Met slugger can re-enter free agency after 2016 if he chooses, forfeiting the last two years of a three-year, $75 million deal. If he does, he’ll have made $27.5 million from the Mets.
