Errand boy Blaz is in a flurry hurry

DES MOINES, Iowa — Mayor de Blasio and his team knocked on 2,500 doors for Hillary Clinton in Iowa before the mayor pulled the plug a day early on his Midwest adventure.

“This is how it works in Iowa. It’s all about direct contact with people, convincing them how important it is to caucus,” de Blasio said Monday on CNN, explaining why he was spending his time on the ground going door to door for the Clinton campaign.

De Blasio, who came with a team that included City Hall aides taking personal time, said the group has stopped at 2,500 homes since Friday.

“It means a real commitment of time — two hours, three hours on a winter night,” de Blasio said of the caucus process. “People have to be highly motivated to not only go but to participate energetically.”

De Blasio had planned to stay in the Hawkeye State until Tuesday, but left Monday night because of an expected snowstorm.

He spent his last day in Iowa doing TV interviews, making phone calls for Clinton and doorknocking with his wife, Chirlane McCray, in Iowa City.

He also planned to attend what Clinton is calling her “victory” party with volunteers and supporters in Des Moines on Monday evening.

De Blasio has not spoken to Clinton since coming to Iowa.

When he first offered to stump for the campaign in Iowa, Clinton’s camp said they had enough surrogates, but Hizzoner said he would be willing to knock on doors.

De Blasio said despite the appeal of Sen. Bernie Sanders to the “very progressive” electorate in Iowa, he expects Clinton to win there and ultimately take the Democratic nomination.

That will leave little chance for Michael Bloomberg, his predecessor as mayor, to jump in, he told CNN.

“I don’t see space for a third party candidate when you have a Hillary Clinton at the top of the Democratic ticket,” de Blasio said.
