THE CITY’S top cop called the recent spate of slashings across the city an “aberration” during a radio appearance Monday.

Police Commissioner Bill Bratton downplayed the rise in knife attacks through January — six of which occurred in the subway system — during an interview on the John Gambling radio program, “The Answer” on 970 AM.

“This is New York and occasionally the media and police get focused on a series of incidents, and that’s what happened here,” he said of the subterranean savagery.

“In the subway system, the issue of concern that we have, that is the most constant concern, the more significant concern in terms of actual numbers ... is pickpocketing and theft of electronic equipment.”

But Bratton was quick to allay concerns of subway violence.

“Certainly assaults, particularly the slashings, the stabbings will always be a high priority.”

Bratton also reiterated his interest in banning repeat transit offenders. “There is a cadre of career professional criminals, some of these people have been around for 20 or 30 years, they’ve been arrested hundreds of times by us,” he said. The Police Department and the MTA are examining their options concerning “career recidivist criminals who use the subways to prey on victims,” he added.

Early Sunday, a 27-year-old man was slashed across the face on the southbound 2 and 3 platform at 110th St. at 3:15 a.m.

The man was in stable condition at St. Luke’s Hospital.

Cops were still searching for the attacker on Monday.
