Moon on Cam: You’d think he got away with rape

- SETH WALDER

CAM NEWTON has become the subject of a spirited debate heading into Super Bowl 50, with people taking sides over the Panthers quarterback’s emphatic on-field celebrations and off-field comments.

One of his earliest mentors and most ardent supporters, Hall of Fame quarterback Warren Moon, can’t understand what all the fuss is about, and he came to Newton’s defense using some inflammatory language.

“You’d think he raped like five pastors’ daughters over the last five years and he’s getting away with it the way people are talking about him,” Moon told Fox Sports about the hate for Newton.

The controversy buzzing around Newton was amped up last week, when Newton said his race is a large factor in how he is perceived.

“I’ve said this since Day 1,” Newton said. “I’m an African-American quarterback that scares people because they haven’t seen nothing that they can compare me to.”

Newton has received backlash for everything from his touchdown dances to having a son with girlfriend Kia Porter despite staying out of trouble since turning pro.

Newton was charged with stealing another student’s laptop when he was a backup quarterback at the University of Florida in 2008 (the charges were later dropped after he went through a pre-trial intervention program) and was part of an eligibility scandal at Auburn that ultimately did not cost him playing time.

The NCAA found that no major violations were committed.

“That’s the thing I don’t understand,” Moon said. “How come they just can’t let it go? If he hasn’t done anything that’s been against the law or anything that would cause negative publicity, isn’t out in the world doing something wrong except for just dancing after a touchdown, I mean what is the big deal?

“He’s worked toward maturity in the last five or six years he’s been in the league and has done positive things to erase a lot of that negative stuff from when he was 18, 19 years old.

“I just don’t know why people can’t let all of that stuff go.”
