Donald, daft & dangerous
Closer and closer to the volcano’s edge teeters the preposterous, dangerous Donald Trump, so far out of his depths and his mind that he just branded millions of lawabiding American women as should-be criminals — before saying well, maybe, never mind. So great was his stupidity, America’s pro-choice and pro-life leaders joined in condemnation.
“There has to be some form of punishment” for women who have abortions if the procedure becomes illegal in the U.S., The Donald spat to MSNBC host Chris Matthews.
By imprisonment, or fines, or stockades Trump wouldn’t say under Matthews’ interrogation — fumbling only, “It’s a very complicated position.” You don’t say. Plainly, the morality of abortion is a deeply personal matter. But whether one loathes Indiana’s new restrictions or feels uncomfortable about New York’s broadly permissive legal framework, the fraught conversation demands healthy respect for the deeply felt positions of others.
Only on the remotest fringes of the Republican Party whose presidential nomination Trump seeks do abortion opponents aim to punish women, as opposed to doctors, for terminating pregnancies.
Or in banana republics — like El Salvador, where women are routinely imprisoned for sus- pected illegal abortions, even if they in fact had involuntary miscarriages.
That does not occur in this country. Just as we do not shut our shores to an entire religion or mass-eject immigrants who are productive members of society.
This savage idiot nonetheless says he’ll prosecute a nearly impossible to prove would-be crime, and make outlaws out of desperate women who terminate pregnancies.
It’s absurd. So, whadyaknow: Three hours later, Trump’s handlers emailed a statement clarifying that “the doctor . . . would be legally responsible, not the woman.”
Trump’s full reversal was necessary because the arrogant fool had shot his mouth off without a clue of what a sound position might be — on the basis of law, or morality, or practicality.
Just as he had days earlier on another excruciatingly complex issue, the choice between a oneand two-state solution for Israel and the Palestinians. Take one: “I’m not saying anything.” Take two, hours later: “I support a two-state solution.”
Trump ended his Matthews interview with one last non-thought on abortion: “It’s a very serious problem and it’s a problem we have to decide on.”
One this master of imbecility sees in the mirror all the time.
