Aroldis’ speed thrills in his pinstripe debut

Chapman joked that there was “a lot of light” from the cameras in front of his locker after the game, but said he was pleased with the fan reaction and that he didn’t have any extra adrenaline on the mound.

“I felt good out there, being my first outing,” Chapman said through a translator. “I was very excited and happy to see the fans receive me the way they did. I was looking to stay focused and get the job done.”

Chapman said he didn’t get rattled when the Royals scored off him with back-toback hits, and that he was focused on “getting another out” when he faced Lorenzo Cain, who grounded out to the pitcher to end the game.

“Swing early, hopefully you can hit it,” said Beltran, when asked what a batter should do facing Chapman. “I think I have maybe five, six at-bats against him, maybe five strikeouts, so, I mean, you’re asking the wrong guy for advice.” McCann said he caught all Chapman’s pitches (17 total) “clean” and didn’t suffer too sore a palm.

Royals starter Chris Young was just what the Yankees needed to start the week, as the 6-10 former Met gave up all five home runs in 2.2 innings. Beltran hit his fifth and sixth on the season, and McCann, Brett Gardner and Aaron Hicks also went yard.

Nova, filling in for the injured Sabathia, pitched into the fifth inning before being removed with two outs and runners on the corners in favor of lefty reliever Phil Coke, who made his first appearance for the Yankees since Game 5 of the 2009 World Series.

“I thought (Nova) did a tremendous job,” said Girardi. “Hated to pull him out there (with two out). I was hoping he’d get a double play so he would get the win but it wasn’t meant to be.”

Nova allowed just one run, his one blip on the evening coming on Alex Gordon’s home run to dead center in the top of the second inning. 17 11 7 101 mph
