11 rings but no love
Jax blanked in exec voting
AS PHIL Jackson would explain, it doesn’t matter because none of them have 11 rings.
The NBA’s executives didn’t think much of what the Knicks president accomplished last season, shutting Jackson out of their annual Executive of the Year ballot released Monday.
Fourteen executives, including Philadelphia’s Sam Hinkie, received at least one vote for either first, second or third. Jackson did not get a vote for a second straight year. San Antonio’s R.C. Buford won the top prize while Portland’s Neil Olshey finished runner-up. Executives were not allowed to vote for themselves.
Jackson lauded his team’s 15-win improvement from the previous season and deserves credit for drafting Kristaps Porzingis. However, his free-agent haul last summer was a mixed bag with mostly poor returns. After striking out on the top free agents and turning off LaMarcus Aldridge from even interviewing with New York, Jackson committed most of his cap space last summer on Robin Lopez, Arron Afflalo, Derrick Williams, Kevin Seraphin and Kyle O’Quinn. Jackson then fired Derek Fisher in the middle of the season because of, among other things, his lack of commitment to the triangle. Jackson also stood pat at the trade deadline as the Knicks lost 28 of their final 38 games.
Jackson has positioned the club to potentially hold more than $30 million in cap space this summer, but the Knicks still don’t have a coach or clear direction. Kurt Rambis, the interim coach, remains the frontrunner but it’s unclear why Jackson hasn’t already named him the coach.
Carmelo Anthony, meanwhile, was one of 10 NBA players nominated for the league’s season-long community assist award. Anthony was nominated for his charitable work through his foundation.
