Stem classes sprout in summer

-

CITY SCHOOLS Chancellor Carmen Fariña is launching a slew of new summer classes focused on the white-hot fields of science, technology engineering and math — collectively known as STEM.

Fariña (photo inset) will outline the public schools’ new STEM Summer in the City classes in a speech Wednesday at New York University’s Tandon School of Engineering in downtown Brooklyn.

The program offers free, fiveweek classes in a variety of high-tech topics to students from underserved areas.

Roughly 4,000 city kids from grades two to 10 are enrolled in the classes that began this month — that’s up from roughly 1,000 students when the effort launched as a pilot program last year.

Students tackle topics that include computer coding, video game design and robotics. Fariña said tech education is key to helping students succeed in the global economy. She called STEM and summer learning “critical pieces of putting our students on the path to college and careers.” Some 1,200 teachers are getting training in the courses this summer.
