ONo Canada! Outrage follows anthem change

-

SAN DIEGO — Canadian vocal quartet The Tenors earned the honor of singing its country’s national anthem before the All-Star Game, but for some reason, the all-white group opted to change the words of the song to include, “All Lives Matter,” a phrase that has become somewhat of a rallying cry for those in disagreement with the Black Lives Matter movement.

When one member of The Tenors was supposed to sing “With glowing hearts we see thee rise,” he instead belted out, “We’re all brothers and sisters, All Lives Matter to the brave,” while holding up an “All Lives Matter” sign.

The altered lyrics only aired in Canada, as FOX went to commercial after Rachel Platten sang “The Star-Spangled Banner” the same way Francis Scott Key wrote it. But video surfaced on Twitter shortly after the debacle.

Many on social media were outraged that singers would actually consider changing the lyrics to the sacred song, regardless of what it was changed to.

MLB did not immediately return a request for comment, but The Tenors released a statement on Twitter denouncing the actions of one seemingly rogue singer. They apologized for the “Disrespectful and misguided lack of judgement by one member of the group.”

“Our sincere apologies and regrets go out to everybody who witnessed this shameful act, to our fellow Canadians, to Major League Baseball, to our friends, families and to all those affected.”

They went on to say the singer, Remigio Pereira, will not be performing with The Tenors until further notice. — Daniel Popper & Kristie Ackert
