NYCFC still eyes soccer-only site

- BY JUSTIN TASCH

New York City FC is helping build new fields for kids around the city, but it is not any closer to finding a spot of its own.

According to team president Jon Patricof, there hasn’t been progress made in securing a site to construct a soccer-specific stadium for the second-year MLS club, which plays its home games at Yankee Stadium.

“There’s no new news on the stadium,” Patricof said. “We’re working really hard on it. We’re extremely committed to finding a home in the five boroughs.”

Sporting director Claudio Reyna said “positive inroads” have been made toward finding a site but provided no other update. He added that the sporting side — the players, coaches and front office — haven’t spent much time worrying about a new stadium and that they’re happy with their current home.

“It’s not something we really think about,” Reyna said. “Sometimes I take a step back and, again, it’s one of those things I dream about and can’t wait and look forward to having our own stadium, but we gotta worry about the next game. So we don’t talk about it.”

Patricof, who took his post on March 1, admitted the process has been difficult, but that the club is “in it for the long term.”

The NYCFC members spoke at Millbrook playground in the Bronx, where Mayor de Blasio announced the launch of an initiative to build 50 soccer fields in under-served neighborhoods over the next five years. Reyna said most of the fields will be acrylic.

At this point, it’s likely that the 38-year-old Frank Lampard won’t be playing anymore by the time NYCFC opens its own stadium, but the English midfielder has been in good form lately after missing the first 12 games of the season with a left calf strain.

“I’m experienced enough to know that when you’re injured and people are talking you have to keep your mouth shut and you just have to go with it, and I tried to do that,” said Lampard, who still gets special treatment on his calf.
