Don’t just beat bigot, crush him
The only thing scarier in this election right now than Donald Trump are the millions of people who support him. After all is said and done, Trump is just one man. A dangerous, twisted, racist, sexist, misogynistic, homophobic man, but one man nonetheless.
This man must be defeated. That is a given. This contest is far less about electing Hillary Clinton or even making long-overdue history by finally putting a woman in the White House.
It is about keeping the Oval Office and the nuclear codes out of the hands of a trigger-happy, law-and-order zealot whose foreign policy strategy can be summed up in three words: Build a wall.
But beating Donald Trump is not enough. He has to be crushed to the earth and squashed like a bug. We have to burn down his village, pillage his valley, shame his horde and send his army into hiding so that he and his ugly, hate-spewing kind never rise again.
We don’t need a victory in November. We need a landslide.
“When Donald Trump says he has your back, you better watch out,” said Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine, Clinton’s pick for vice president, at a Florida rally with the former First Lady.
“He leaves a trail of broken promises and wrecked lives wherever he goes. We can’t afford to let him do the same thing to our country.”
As Clinton and Kaine head to Philadelphia for this week’s Democratic National Convention, party leaders need to develop a message and a strategy that targets something bigger than an Electoral College majority.
Because if you think the Republican party is fractured, think of the division in our nation that created the opportunity for a Donald Trump to thrive in the first place.
It is a division born from backlash, a still-angry, gun-hoarding, bunch of Birthers clinging to resentment that a person named Barack Obama could be elected not once, but twice to the nation’s highest office.
Our vote Nov. 8 must send a message, and the message must be this: Get over it. Get over it, extremists. Get over it, demagogues. Get over it, bigots, bumpkins and rednecks. Your day is done. It’s time to heal our land.
