Papelbon booed off

WASHINGTON — The Padres hit back-to-back homers off Shawn Kelley in the eighth inning and scored four runs off Jonathan Papelbon in the ninth to beat the Nationals, 10-6, on Sunday.

San Diego won two of three against Washington to earn its first series victory over the Nationals since May 2011. Ryan Buchter (2-0) pitched a scoreless eighth to earn the victory.

With the game tied at 6, Wil Myers drew a one-out walk off Papelbon and moved to second on a wild pitch before Yangervis Solarte’s RBI single. The Padres added two more singles to load the bases, setting up Alexei Ramirez’s three-run double.

Nationals manager Dusty Baker then relieved Papelbon (2-3), who was booed after giving up his first runs since June 12.

WHITE SOX 5, TIGERS 4

Melky Cabrera drove in Adam Eaton with a game-ending single in the ninth inning after closer David Robertson gave up three home runs in the top half to lead the host White Sox to a 5-4 victory hours after they suspended ace Chris Sale for five days.

The White Sox beat the Tigers, 4-3, earlier in the day on a single by Eaton in the ninth after play was suspended because of rain the previous night.

Robertson got the victory in that one and picked up another in the scheduled game despite a rough ninth inning.

ASTROS 13, ANGELS 3

In Houston, Jose Altuve hit two of the Astros’ season-high five homers and had a career-high six RBI to help sweep the Angels.

RED SOX 8, TWINS 7

Rick Porcello became the first Boston pitcher in 55 years to open a season 10-0 in Fenway Park, and Hanley Ramirez and Travis Shaw both hit three-run homers as the Red Sox beat the Twins to earn a split of the four-game series.

ORIOLES 5, INDIANS 3

Pinch-hitter Nolan Reimold hit a gamewinnin­g, two-out homer in the ninth inning after Pedro Alvarez reached on a strikeout, and the host Orioles beat the Indians for a three-game sweep.

Cody Allen (2-4) began the ninth by striking out Alvarez, but the ball eluded catcher Roberto Perez. After fielding the bouncing ball off the backstop, Perez hit Alvarez in the helmet with the throw for an error.

A sacrifice bunt and a strikeout followed before Reimold lined a 2-0 pitch into the left-field seats.

BLUE JAYS 2, MARINERS 0

J.A. Happ and three relievers combined on a one-hitter, Edwin Encarnacio­n hit a solo home run and the Blue Jays beat the visiting Mariners to avoid a threegame sweep.

CUBS 6, BREWERS 5

Anthony Rizzo hit a three-run double in the seventh inning and the Cubs rallied from a four-run deficit to beat the Brewers in Milwaukee.

PIRATES 5, PHILLIES 4

In Pittsburgh, Adam Frazier’s pinch-hit home run in the seventh inning powered the Pirates past the Phillies.

RANGERS 2, ROYALS 1

Delino DeShields homered in the seventh to break a tie and the visiting Rangers defeated the Royals.

DODGERS 9, CARDINALS 6

Adrian Gonzalez hit a grand slam and Howie Kendrick added a two-run homer, helping the visiting Dodgers spoil Mike Mayers’ major-league debut. Scott Kazmir (9-3) pitched five innings to earn the victory. He allowed three runs on six hits.
