Real mogul Bloomy rips Don’s ‘con’
PHILADELPHIA — Former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg ripped into Donald Trump in an unprecedented prime-time speech Wednesday at the Democratic National Convention, calling him a dangerous “demagogue,” reckless hypocrite, and — in the worst putdown one billionaire can hurl at another — a failed businessman.
In his most extensive remarks to date on the man who once described him as a “friend,” Bloomberg blasted Trump for his “well-documented record of bankruptcies,” numerous lawsuits and history of hiring undocumented immigrants — despite promises to build a wall to keep them out.
“Trump says he wants to run the nation like he’s run his business. God help us,” Bloomberg said, to huge cheers from the crowd.
He added, “I’m a New Yorker. And I know a con when I see one.”
The Democrat-turned-Republican-turned-Independent (below) said he was speaking at the DNC as a proud American and a businessman — and not one who got his start “with a milliondollar check from my father.”
“The richest thing about Donald Trump is his hypocrisy,” Bloomberg said.
“He wants you to believe that we can solve our biggest problems by deporting Mexicans and shutting out Muslims. He wants you to believe that erecting trade barriers will bring back good jobs. He’s wrong on both counts.”
In another unusual move for a convention speaker, Bloomberg also candidly acknowledged he’s got some problems with Hillary Clinton — but stressed that no one is as bad as Trump.
“I know Hillary Clinton is not flawless. No candidate is. But she is the right choice, and the responsible choice, in this election,” he said. “No matter what you may think about her politics or her record, Hillary Clinton understands that this is not reality television. This is reality.”
