Still Berning for the revolution

-

Kew Gardens: To all the Sanders devotees: Now is the time to continue your fight. You now need to put in the work for the next four to eight years to bring about change. It’s hard and doesn’t just happen in a few months or year. The most important elections are local ones, sending your representatives to Washington. One person does not make the decisions. Bernie and Hillary have fought for just about the same things and came together to compile a platform for the Democratic convention to run on. Just because your candidate didn’t win this time is no reason to give up. There is very little instant gratification in this world. Leslie Duzant Oceanside, L.I.: As a one-time Bernie Sanders supporter, I am now wondering which Bernie is speaking the truth. The one who campaigned against Hillary during the primaries or the one who just nominated her. Huuuuuuuge disappointment and betrayal!

Tony Giametta

Low-class losers

Delray Beach, Fla.: The Sanders delegates are rude and selfish. All they accomplished was to give Trumpets something to laugh and tweet about. Rude behavior lowers the dignity of running for office. Isn’t there a way to vet delegates? Jill Parker

Turncoat

Bronxville, N.Y.: If you can’t beat the corrupt system, join the corrupt system. Nice job, Bernie.

Lisa De Pierro

Come together

Manhattan: I don’t usually agree with Shaun King, but he’s right about one thing: stopping Trump is a national emergency (“Berners, it’s Clinton or we all suffer,” July 27). I’ve never liked or trusted Hillary, but we need to keep Trump as far away from the White House and the nuclear trigger as is humanly possible. Hey — Mars works. H.D. Kayne

Beyond beating Trump

Union, N.J.: Shaun King played the right tune, but missed some of the notes. I am a dedicated Berner, but I am also a realist. Bernie has started a revolution and we have climbed many rungs on the ladder to success, as evidenced by the Democratic platform and comments from Hillary. Here is the real story: A not-voting, Green-voting, Libertarian-voting or, God forbid, Trump-voting member of the true Bernie Revolution will not just knock us off the ladder, but we will lie there with our backs broken for many years. Bernie’s success can only be made concrete by a Democratic President. I am deeply disheartened by the primary outcomes and deeply disgusted by the Democratic National Committee’s tactics. Yet I urge all those who love Bernie to stand with him and Elizabeth Warren in the Senate, return people like Russ Feingold and Tammy Duckworth, elect people like Tim Canova to oust Debbie Wasserman Schultz, and give the government to all those who are progressive. King was right: If it takes holding your noses, do it and pull the lever for Hillary, because without a Democratic President, our revolution doesn’t just die, it will be dead and buried, alongside our democracy and the real America. Louis Alt

The wrong flag flying

North Salem, N.Y.: Did anyone notice that on the first day at the Democratic convention there were no American flags on the platform and few in the audience? However, there were Palestinian flags in the audience. It looks like the Democrats are saying goodbye to Israel. And goodbye to patriotism.

Loyal, but cheating

New Orleans: If Bill Clinton loves Hillary so much, why has he run around on her for the past 40 years? Bonnie Broome

Enemies then, pals now

South Ozone Park: Michelle Obama referred to Hillary Clinton as “our friend” during her convention speech. How affectionate. It wasn’t so long ago that Valerie Jarrett and Michelle called Hillary “Hildebeest.” Michelle’s hypocrisy knows no bounds. Kenneth Kucinskas

Moscow’s candidate

Howard Beach: It should be a cause of great concern to everyone if it is proven that Putin’s people hacked and released DNC emails right before the convention to cause chaos. Trump has made no secret of his admiration of Putin. When he was told that he kills political opponents and journalists, his response was “he’s a great leader.” Trump’s companies have the financial backing from many Russian billionaires. Since Trump thrives on giving everyone he disagrees with nicknames, it seems that we should just refer to him as Comrade Trump. Barbara Berg

Race and restraints

Piscataway, N.J.: While it’s not politically correct or in line with the liberal mindset, but did anyone ever stop to think that the reason black and Hispanic students are restrained and disciplined more than white students is because they are the most disruptive and violent in the school system? Vincent Piano

Sign from above

New Rochelle, N.Y.: To ISIS: Please pray to the God you say you honor with your merciless bloodbath of innocent men, women and children to give us a sign of your rightness so that all of the rest of us can commit suicide to help you. Gary Birgy

Keep it clean-shaven

Woodside: What’s with the beards in baseball? I hope the Yankees never succumb to this fad. Fran Houlahan

A ball is a ball

Highland, N.Y.: When are major league umpires going to stop reinventing the strike zone? If there is daylight between the ball and home plate, it is not a strike, it is not too close to take. It is a ball. Either call balls and strikes according to the strike zone in the rule book, or change the damn rule and enforce it. No wonder players are always complaining. The strike zone changes game to game, umpire to umpire, sometimes even inning to inning. It’s just as frustrating for the fans as well. Come on, it’s not exactly rocket science. It’s time for Major League Baseball to step in, get the umpires on the same page, or get new umpires that get it.

A tale of two catchers

Brooklyn: Voicer Jo-Ann Maginnis wrote a silly letter stating that Thurman Munson belongs in the Hall of Fame. While Munson was a fine player, his numbers aren’t even close to being Hall of Fame worthy. He hit 113 home runs and had 701 runs batted in 11 seasons. He was not a dominant player — Mike Piazza was. Piazza hit 427 homers and had 1,335 RBI. Even if Munson had played another five or six years, he wouldn’t have come close to those numbers. Maginnis must be a Yankee fan; it’s the only way to explain her letter. Dennis Burge

Jordan steps forward

Forest Hills: To sportswriter Ebenezer Samuel: You criticize Michael Jordan for not speaking up sooner about issues, well, where is Jay Z — or is he too busy vacationing and taking pictures of his family every other day? Where’s Sean Combs, 50 Cent and other people who kids look up to? Every occupation has good people and bad people. Unfortunately, in every occupation, you never know who the bad ones are until something happens. Every life should matter, but when it seems everybody, no matter what the age, color, creed or religion, has a gun, situations are even more tense for police officers who leave their homes in the morning and don’t know if they’re coming back at night. The whole world, not just individual cities, is scared, and in 2016, it shouldn’t be this way. Sherri Rosen

Licensed pros fixing elevators

Manhattan: The elevator failure at a Washington Heights store that resulted in the horrific death of Jose Fernandez might have been avoided if New York had made it illegal for anyone other than a licensed mechanic to install an elevator (“Hell elevator,” July 25). The accident showed how crucial regulation was to the safety of all lives. We must put ideology aside and demand that government more carefully scrutinize the conditions of our buildings. And, along with passing new legislation, that would mean allocating Department of Buildings money to hire many additional inspectors.

Judy Richheimer

Uncovering the coverup

Brooklyn: I’m not surprised Zachary Carter and crew got caught playing Dr. Redacto on the nursing home scandal. I’ve witnessed his lawyers lie to a federal judge, three appellate judges and a New York Supreme Court justice. I’m just disappointed he and his crew of lawyers’ other dirty work hasn’t been exposed, including protecting NYPD crimes. Carter’s career is over. Which top officials will be joining him, de Blasio or Bratton?
