No way! Jose is on DL now, too

-

Another one bites the dust. Jose Reyes joins the ever-growing list of injured players as the Mets placed the infielder on the 15-day disabled list with a left oblique strain, retroactive to July 27, prior to Saturday’s game against the Rockies.

The Mets signed right-handed outfielder Justin Ruggiano to a major-league contract to take Reyes’ spot on the roster and he started in center field.

To make room for Ruggiano on the 40-man roster, Matt Harvey was shifted to the 60-day disabled list.

“It’s disappointing because I want to be on the field, I want to be playing,” Reyes said. “The other stuff that happened to me, I kind of feel like I lost a lot this year. I only played what, 14, 15 games? And now to go to the DL, I mean that’s not fun at all. A little bit disappointed about it. But you know, nothing I can do.”

Mets manager Terry Collins said it was not a difficult decision to put him on the DL.

“The only tests we needed to do was to find out if he could swing. And he’s unable to swing right-handed, which is part of his game,” Collins said. “We hope we caught it early enough so that he didn’t overdo it and it’s only a couple of weeks.

Ruggiano, an eight-year veteran, spent most of 2016 in the Texas Rangers’ Triple-A system before being released on July 28.

“I feel blessed to be here right now,” he said. “Three months in the minor leagues will do that to just about anybody and it was a learning experience.”

MAGIC MIKE

Count Collins among the many who appreciate how truly fascinating Mike Piazza’s career was.

“He certainly epitomizes what hard work can do,” Collins said. “Guy’s a 62nd round draft choice, drafted as a favor and he went to the Hall of Fame because nothing ever stood in the way of him being a great. So it’s an honor to have him here, an honor to be a part of it.”

EYE ON THE PRIZE

With Monday’s trade deadline approaching and the rumor mill intensifying, Collins is trying to make sure his players stay focused.

“I already talked to them,” Collins said. “I talked to them as a team and then the other day when Travis (d’Arnaud’s) name first appeared. I said, look it’s part of the business. He said yeah, I’ve been traded before.”

Collins said he’s definitely evolved on how he handles the trade deadline rumors.

“Until last year, I was always caught up, you’re going to get a guy, think you might lose a guy. Last year made a big impact. I try not to get too involved in it,” he said.

JUSTIN TIME

Justin Ruggiano said he was hoping to bring some stability to the Mets, but Saturday’s game was anything but that.

The Mets’ newest addition went 1-for-3 at the plate but was caught stealing at third base in the fourth inning.

Things didn’t get better in the field when Ruggiano let a ground ball single go right under his glove, allowing Rockies’ DJ LeMahieu to reach second base.
