Slay mom ‘jealous’ of girl & dad
THE WICKED Queens woman who strangled her 9-year-old stepdaughter Friday was jealous that the girl and her dad spoke to each other in Punjabi, when she only knew English, police sources said.
Shamdai Arjun, 55, was envious of the bond her husband had developed with his daughter, Ashdeep Kaur, in the three months since she came to America from India, sources said.
The girl told her father, Sukhjinder Singh, that Arjun wouldn’t feed her and had slapped her, sources said.
Just three days before Ashdeep’s death, Arjun went so far as to tell the girl’s father that she’d kill her, officials said.
On Friday, she “made good” on her threats, strangling the innocent child, prosecutors said.
Ashdeep was found dead, naked and curled into a fetal position in a bathtub in her home. In addition to being choked, she suffered blunt trauma to her head and had a cut inside her mouth and a loose tooth, police sources said.
Arjun was arrested Saturday at the South Ozone Park home of her former husband, Raymond Narayan, who was also taken into custody.
He’s charged with obstructing governmental administration.
A witness saw Arjun leaving her South Richmond Hill apartment with Narayan and her two young grandchildren at about 5:30 p.m. and asked where Ashdeep was, prosecutors said.
Arjun responded that the girl was in the bathroom, waiting for her dad, but when the witness realized the bathroom light had been on since 11 a.m., she called Singh, prosecutors said. The locked door was broken down, revealing the horrific scene of Ashdeep’s murder.
Arjun’s lawyer, Judah Maltz, said Tuesday that his client denies killing Ashdeep.
“She’s completely innocent. She made no statements of responsibility. There could be other people in that apartment,” Maltz said.
