Chipping away at healthy snack myth

- Nicole Lyn Pesce

SORRY TO RUIN snacktime, but those Popchips aren’t as guilt-free as you think. And they won’t even leave you feeling full.

The airy crisps have won over healthconscious noshers since 2007 by “popping” potatoes in a heated, pressurized chamber — rather than sizzling them in oil — to deliver a crunchy treat with just 4 grams of fat and 120 calories per 20 chips. That’s half the fat of the average fried chip! (A serving of Classic Lay’s has 10 grams of fat and 160 calories.)

Another Popchips plus — the brand doesn’t pack added preservatives, artificial flavors and colors, cholesterol or trans fats. They’re gluten-free, kosher and vegan. They sound like a dieter’s dream come true, right?

Well, it’s time to wake up, snackers. “Popped snacks may sound good for you, but they’re still a member of the snack aisle,” Consumer Reports warned in a 2013 review. In fact, some of the popped chips the group studied actually had more fat than baked counterparts, and about the same number of calories. FILM STAR Jennifer Lawrence is becoming a tough act to follow — financially speaking.

The Oscar winner is the world’s highestpaid actress for a second straight year, collecting a cool $46 million before taxes over a recent 12-month stretch, according to Forbes.

That’s a whopping $13 million more than runnerup Melissa McCarthy, who took home $33 million, thanks largely to her role in the “Ghostbusters” reboot.

Lawrence’s haul stems in part from her income from the final “Hunger Games” movie. She also scored a considerable upfront payday for her space adventure film “Passengers,” due out in December. The list counts income from June 2015 to June 2016.

Despite her enviable earnings, Lawrence fell short of the $52 million she earned to top the list a year ago. And that total was dwarfed by Robert Downey Jr., who led all actors the last time around with an estimated $80 million. Forbes is set to release the new list of highest-paid actors Thursday.

Trailing Lawrence and McCarthy on the latest actress list, Scarlett Johansson finished third, pulling in a mere $25 million.
