YES, FOLKS, that was a giant potato you saw floating up the East River.

The 6-ton mockup (photos) circled Manhattan Wednesday on a barge, a promotion by the Idaho Potato Commission. It was escorted by the “Spud Studs,” three jet skiers, all from Boise, Idaho, skimming alongside.

Larry Bathe, who lugs the giant tater around the country on a 72-foot-long flatbed truck, said, “People love it. They want to know how we grew it and got it out of the ground. It’s an eye-catcher.”

In its fifth national tour for the Goliath potato — built from fiberglass, concrete and steel — it has traveled through Connecticut, New Jersey, Staten Island, and then to Red Hook, in Brooklyn. Just how big is this potato? If real, it would take 10,000 years to grow and make 1.5 million french fries. A 73-YEAR-OLD Queens man, who threatened to jump from a midtown building after his girlfriend’s body was found in his apartment, has been charged with murder, officials said.

Chitwah Tse of Fresh Meadows, was arraigned Tuesday night for allegedly beating 61-year-old Huizhen Zhan to death on July 31.

“The defendant is accused of fatally bludgeoning the woman with whom he shared an apartment and a life together,” Queens County District Attorney Richard Brown said.

The couple shared a twobedroom basement apartment on 65th Ave. with a third person, who heard loud banging coming from their bedroom, prosecutors said. The next day, Tse met with relatives in Chinatown and allegedly said, “I am sorry for all that I have done. I don’t know if I'll ever see you again.”

An hour later, attorney Gary Kapikian alerted police that a new client, Tse, had told him there was a corpse in the apartment, prosecutors said.
