Curtis Granderson’s struggles are certainly being noticed in the GM’s office, based on the way Sandy Alderson answered a question about the outfielder’s disappointing year so far.
“Obviously, Grandy has not had a great season and certainly in recent weeks, recent days, has not performed to his expectations,” Alderson said. “As far as longterm is concerned, I think we’re all very confident that he’ll get back to his typical performance level.
“Short-term, we don’t have a lot of freeboard at this point. Every game is important. I think Terry (Collins) knows that and I’m sure will use the players accordingly.
“But certainly, we expect Grandy to get back to a performance level. The question is when and how much tolerance we have for waiting.”
Granderson, who did not start Friday night against Philly lefty Adam Morgan, is in a 9-for-64 (.141) sinkhole over his last 17 games. Overall, he’s batting .222 with a .310 on-base percentage and .423 slugging, well off last year’s marks. He has 20 home runs and 34 RBI.
BRUCE BOOED
Jay Bruce returned to the Met lineup after missing Thursday’s game because of a tight right calf suffered on Wednesday night in St. Louis but his struggles continued. He was 0-for-4 and struck out all four trips to the plate and some fans socked him with boos even though the Mets had a big lead late in the game.
“We’ve got to get Jay going,” Terry Collins said after the game.
Bruce had to go through a pregame workout to test the calf and he said it felt fine.
