NEWS PRO’S G’BYE
Osgood leaving TV
VETERAN NEWS anchor Charles Osgood is stepping down from his post on “CBS Sunday Morning.”
The longtime journalist, 83, announced Sunday he’s retiring from the weekly newsmagazine after hosting the program for more than 22 years.
“Some of you may have heard rumors lately that I won’t be hosting these ‘Sunday Morning’ broadcasts very much longer.
“Well, I’m here to tell you that the rumors are true,” Osgood told viewers during Sunday’s broadcast.
Osgood’s final episode is set to air Sept. 25. Following his TV departure, he’ll continue to host his daily CBS Radio talk show, “The Osgood File.”
The Daily News reported in January that Osgood was expected to end his tenure on the popular morning show at some point this year.
In Sunday’s announcement, the decorated TV personality gushed over his experience anchoring the program for more than two decades.
“For years now, people — even friends and family — have been asking me why I keep doing this considering my age. I am pushing 84,” he said.
“It’s just that it’s been such a joy doing it. Who wouldn’t want to be the one who gets to introduce these terrific storytellers and the producers and writers and others who put this wonderful show together?”
Known for his trademark bow tie and easygoing demeanor, Osgood has worked for CBS News for nearly 50 years.
He took over as the host of “CBS Sunday Morning” in 1994, replacing inaugural anchor Charles Kuralt.
Osgood’s final broadcast will serve as a tribute to his many years and achievements on the show, as well as his legacy beyond it.
“Charlie is not just beloved by our viewers. He’s beloved by all of us who work each week crafting the stories we put on the program,” said Rand Morrison, the show’s executive producer.
“Working with him truly has been an honor, a privilege and a joy.”
A replacement for Osgood has not been announced.
