Devin to PUP as Jet cuts continue

- BY MANISH MEHTA

THE JETS started paring down their roster with 11 cuts Sunday. Secondyear wide receiver Devin Smith was also placed on the Reserve/PUP list as he continues rehabbing his surgically repaired ACL.

Smith, who has been on the PUP list since the beginning of training camp, is ineligible to practice with the team for the first six weeks of the season. The Jets will then have three weeks to place him on the active roster or shut him down for the season.

Smith, a second-round pick a year ago, is excluded from practicing or playing with the Jets for the first six weeks of the season. After that, the club has a threeweek window to activate him to the 53-man roster. The emergence of three rookie receivers (Jalin Marshall, Robby Anderson and Charone Peake) this summer softens the blow of Smith’s absence.

The Jets are down to 78 players. They’ll have to get to 75 by Tuesday.

The complete list of expected cuts: OL Jesse Davis, C Kyle Friend, G Jarvis Harrison, OLB Deion Barnes, DT Shelby Harris, DE Helva Matungulu, RB Lache Seastrunk, RB Terry Williams, WR Kyle Williams, TE Jason Vander Laan and K Ross Martin. Martin's departure means Nick Folk has won yet another preseason kicking competition.

l David Harris got relatively good news one day after giving the Jets a scare in their preseason loss to the Giants. The veteran LB was injured on the final play of the first half, but an MRI on Sunday revealed only a bruised shoulder, according to a source. Harris is expected to be ready for the regular-season opener on Sept. 11.
