Guilty in 1 of 2 school sex raps
A BROOKLYN jury convicted a former high school assistant principal of forcing a student to have sex with him inside his office and cleared him of charges he sexually molested another.
When a now 21-year-old woman reported to investigators that William Abreu allegedly grabbed her buttocks in March 2011 after propositioning her to earn $4,000 to have sex with other men and “act as his wife,” she also alerted them about another victim who was raped by him in July 2009.
The jury of seven men and five women acquitted Abreu (photo) of sexually molesting and endangering the welfare of the first woman to come forward, who has a pending civil lawsuit against him.
Abreu, 47, a former assistant principal at Progress High School was convicted of raping the second victim. The now 24-year-old woman, who was deported to Honduras in December 2009, testified that Abreu threatened to call immigration if she did not have sex with him. She did. “(Abreu) violated the trust of a vulnerable teenager when he coerced her to engage in an unwanted sex act using her immigration status as leverage,” said Brooklyn District Attorney Kenneth Thompson.
“This young woman had the courage to speak out against this abuse. He’s now been held accountable for his deplorable actions,” said Thompson.
Abreu, who is out on $25,000 cash bail, was ordered by Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Vincent Del Giudice to return to court on Nov. 29 for sentencing. He faces up to four years in prison. Abreu was canned by the Department of Education in November 2013.
