Jeremy Lin knows he wants to do something, say something, to support the cause sparked in the sports world by 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick and other athletes making a stand recently over social injustices.
The Nets point guard — and former Knicks sensation — admittedly has been “thinking a lot” about the topic and having conversations with friends in and out of the NBA this past week about the proper contribution he and his new teammates in Brooklyn can make to bring more attention to the situation.
“People are asking me ‘are you going to do anything? I haven’t completely figured it out. I’ve been just asking questions and thinking a lot,” Lin said at the Nets media day on Monday at the team’s practice facility. “The one thing I will say is that I’m very thankful there is an increase in exposure and awareness about it, because I think that’s something that even though it’s such a big topic and even though it’s been going on for such a long time — like, hundreds of years — in some ways it was kind of swept under the rug until recently.
“I think a lot of people that weren’t necessarily interested in it before, are now engaged in it, and I think that’s always going to be the first step towards any change, which if we’re realistic and if we’re looking at long-term change or big-time change to be long-term, there are systemic issues, there are social issues that aren’t going to be solved overnight. But the quicker we can get talking about it, the more I think things will happen.”
