Syndergaard ready to take the mound

-

MIAMI — Noah Syndergaard will start Tuesday night and again on Sunday if needed. The Mets’ remaining healthy ace has recovered enough from his bout with strep throat to start Tuesday night’s game against the Marlins, Terry Collins said before Monday night’s series opener at Marlins Park.

“Syndergaard is good, Syndergaard will pitch tomorrow,” the Mets manager said, laying out the rotation for the remaining regular-season games. “We’ll go (Bartolo) Colon, Syndergaard, (Seth) Lugo, (Robert) Gsellman, Colon and then Syndergaard.”

Collins said he is only planning to pitch Syndergaard Sunday in Philadelphia if it is a game that the Mets need to win for a playoff spot. If the game determines home-field advantage for the wild card, Collins said he would have to take it into consideration.

“I don’t know yet,” Collins said. “That’s a real good question. We’ve got to get in first right now. If we get in, we’ll figure out.”

With Monday’s loss, the Mets lead the idle Giants by a half-game for the first National League wild-card spot and the homefield advantage that goes with it. The Mets stayed 1.5 games up on St. Louis, which lost to Cincinnati, 15-2. Wednesday.

He is already going to need surgery on his left elbow this winter to remove a bone spur that has caused him discomfort for most of the season.

Adam Conley, scheduled to start for the Marlins in Sunday’s canceled game against the Braves, started Monday night. Collins choose to go with Eric Campbell at first instead of Lucas Duda, because of how many games he has missed this season.

“Lucas hasn’t really faced lefties in a long time, James (Loney) doesn’t have very good numbers against him,” Collins said.

Duda pinch hit for Campbell in the fourth inning and stayed in the game, going 1 for 2 with an RBI single.

Duda missed 107 games with a stress fracture in his lower back.
