Both moms & dads are lovin’ leave
SOME 164 CITY workers have used a new paid parental leave program — and just about as many dads as moms are taking part, officials said Tuesday.
Employees taking advantage of the six weeks of fully paid time off have been 52% female and 48% male, the de Blasio administration testified at a City Council hearing.
So far, the city has spent $1.6 million on the benefit, which Mayor de Blasio instituted by executive order for about 20,000 managers and employees who aren’t part of a union.
It’s being paid for by scrapping a small raise managers were set to get and two vacation days for the most senior employees.
City Councilman Daniel Garodnick, chairman of the Economic Development Committee, called the close-to-even gender split a “very encouraging number.”
The majority of the 300,000-strong city workforce is unionized and does not receive the new benefit, which would have to be negotiated as part of their contracts.
