Retiring not on Sabathia radar

-

CC Sabathia has spent the past few years making the transition away from life as a power pitcher, understanding how to use his diminished velocity to his advantage. Having finally figured out what works for him and what doesn’t, the big lefty is excited for 2017, which will mark the final year of his contract with the Yankees.

But rather than look at next season as the end, Sabathia believes it’s only the beginning.

“It’s definitely gone by quick,” Sabathia said of his eight years in pinstripes. “I know I want to pitch after next year, but I haven’t thought about where or what. Hopefully it will be here. We’ll see.”

After 16 years, 222 wins and more than 3,100 innings pitched, how does Sabathia know he’ll feel the same a year from now when he’s approaching the end of his contract?

“I just know myself,” Sabathia said. “I know I feel like it’s not my time yet. Barring any crazy injuries, I know I can pitch past next year.

“I feel like this is just the beginning of what I’m trying to do. I feel like there’s a lot more still to learn and a lot better to get. It’s exciting.”

Sabathia has been solid for the Yankees most of the season, going 8-12 with a 4.02 ERA in 29 starts.

“I feel like I’ve made big strides in becoming the pitcher I’ve been trying to become; I’m excited about it,” Sabathia said. “As long as I’m healthy, I feel like I’ll be able to get big-league hitters out. I’ve proven that.”

It has also been nearly a full year since Sabathia checked into a Connecticut rehab facility, where he remained for a month to deal with his alcohol addiction. He enters this offseason with a clearer head than he’s had in years, excited for the prospects of what the winter will bring.

“It’s a big change,” Sabathia said. “I feel good, I’m in a good spot, my head is in the right spot going into the offseason. I’m excited to spend some time with my kids and just enjoying that time.”
