Aussie heartthrob says starring in World War II drama “Hacksaw Ridge” convinced him that his disgraced countryman should be forgiven for his racist past. “Getting to work with the guy, you realize how lovely a man he is and how fun and energetic and what a childlike energy he has and how it so infectious,” Bracey told us at the fifth annual Australians in Film Awards in Los Angeles. Gibson (photo), an Oscar-winning director who was born in Peekskill, Westchester County, and moved to Sydney when he was 12, has become almost as well known for his bigoted rants as he has for filmmaking. Gibson’s troubles started in 1991 when he made anti-gay comments to a Spanish newspaper, for which he later apologized, claiming he’d had a drink to two. But Gibson was back in hot water in 2006 when he was pulled over for drunk driving and asked the police officer if she was Jewish, then blamed Jews for “all the wars in the world.” This came while his 2004 film “The Passion of the Christ” was still being heavily criticized for its depiction of Jewish people.

The “Conspiracy Theory” star’s darkest hour came in 2010 when he was recorded yelling at his wife, Oksana Grigorieva, in a phone call where he said “You look like a f---ing pig in heat” and told her that it would be her own fault if she got “raped by a pack of n----rs.” That same recording heard Gibson denigrate Latinos too.

Just last week, the 60-yearold actor told an Australian TV station that he has been sober for a decade and asked viewers to “imagine the worst moment you ever had being recorded and broadcast to the world.” Bracey insists the “Braveheart” star is no monster.

“We need to separate what happened and the storm around it from the man he actually is and the work that he does,” he says.

It was announced on Monday that Gibson will recieve the Hollywood Film Awards’ Hollywood Director Award on Nov. 6. Gibson will find out if movie audiences in the U.S. have forgiven him when “Hacksaw Ridge” opens here on Nov. 4. Just in time for Thanksgiving, actor and impersonator has signed on as Animal Farm Sanctuary’s “Adopt a Turkey” spokesman. “Like most people, I don’t like thinking about things that make me feel bad,” Baldwin (inset) said in a statement that asks animal lovers to show mercy on the 46 million turkeys that’ll be killed next month. “Turkeys are just as friendly, smart and full of feeling as my dogs, and they deserve to be treated better.”
