What I meant in jam email

- Stephen Rex Brown

“TIME FOR SOME traffic problems in Fort Lee” actually meant “time for a legitimate traffic study,” the writer of a notorious Bridgegate email testified Tuesday.

Bridget Kelly, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie’s former deputy chief of staff, sought to explain her incriminating message sent in August 2013 during tough crossexamination by Assistant U.S. Attorney Vikas Khanna in Newark Federal Court.

“The words, and they are obviously why we are here today, are not as they are read,” Kelly said. “‘Problems’ to me meant that was the effect of the study being done in Fort Lee.”

Kelly insisted she’d been deceived by former Port Authority official David Wildstein — who has already pleaded guilty for his role in the Bridgegate scandal — and thought the traffic tieups were for the study.

The feds says Kelly, her co-defendant in the trial, former Port Authority executive Bill Baroni, and Wildstein used the lane closures as political revenge against the mayor of Fort Lee for failing to endorse Christie.
