76ers pull singer in ‘We Matter’ jersey

-

Philadelphia 76ers national anthem singer Sevyn Streeter said she was told by the team she could not perform because of her “We Matter” jersey.

She was scheduled to sing before the Sixers’ season opener against the Oklahoma City Thunder, but said in an interview with The Associated Press late Wednesday she was told she would not sing just minutes before her performance.

“I’d say two minutes before we were about to walk out ... the organization told me that I could not wear my shirt while singing the national anthem at their game,” the R&B singer said by phone. “I was never given any kind of dress code. I was never asked beforehand to show my wardrobe.”

The Sixers declined to say why Streeter’s performance was canceled.

Philadelphia was bested by Russell Westbrook and the Thunder, 103-97, as Westbrook had 32 points, 12 rebounds and took over late in his revenge tour debut without dynamic scorer Kevin Durant.

l Anthony Davis scored 50 points and had 16 rebounds in the Pelicans’ 107-102 loss to the Nuggets. He joins Michael Jordan, Wilt Chamberlain and Elgin Baylor as the only players to score 50 in a season opener.

ROMO RECOVERING

Tony Romo participated in throwing drills at practice Wednesday for the first time since the Dallas quarterback broke a bone in his back in a preseason game at Seattle.

The 36-year-old Romo worked in several individual drills in shorts and a T-shirt with his teammates in full pads. While he almost certainly won’t play against Philadelphia on Sunday, it’s the biggest step in his latest return from injury.

l Buffalo Bills running back LeSean McCoy spent practice working out on his own to test a nagging left hamstring injury, leaving his playing status uncertain against New England.

Big Daddy Loud Mouth will soon be yakking in the City of Brotherly Love.

Chris Carlin, who has cohosted SportsNet New York’s Loud Mouths since 2008, is headed to WIP-FM, the Philadelphia all-sports outlet, to host the station’s afternoon drivetime show, according to industry sources. —Bob Raissman
