Great save by vets of badly hurt puppy

- BY LISA L. COLANGELO

THIS POOCH needs a break from his ruff life.

A severely injured puppy found on the Lower East Side is recovering at an animal hospital.

The dog (photo) brought into Animal Care Centers of New York’s Brooklyn shelter on Friday — suffering from deep lacerations to his head and body.

Staffers dubbed the sweet-natured pit bull mix, estimated to be about 4 months old, Trey.

He was transferred to BluePearl’s emergency veterinary facility in Midtown.

Dr. Marc Greenberg, medical director at BluePearl, said that while it’s unclear exactly what caused the pooch’s wounds, it could be due to a collar embedded in its neck.

But Greenberg said since the injuries extend to Trey’s legs, they could have also was been caused by a burn, possibly a chemical one.

Animal Care Centers is using funds from its special treatment and recovery program to pay for the extensive treatment.

“Despite Trey’s injuries, he remains sweet and full of wiggles,” said Care Centers spokeswoman Katy Hansen.

In the coming days, Trey’s wounds will be stitched up and start the recovery process in the shelter’s foster care program.

“Long-term, he should be good,” Greenberg said. “We hope to get him healed and then on to a long and happy life with a new family.”

Care Centers officials have been in contact with the NYPD about Trey — although it is unclear whether his condition is the result of animal cruelty. Anyone with information about Trey is urged to contact the shelter at info@nycacc.org.
