Chisox get 3 Nats kids for OF Eaton

-

One day after falling short in their bid for Chris Sale, the Nationals made a big move Wednesday, acquiring outfielder Adam Eaton from the White Sox for three players.

Chicago received top pitching prospects Lucas Giolito and Reynaldo Lopez, along with 2016 first-round pick Dane Dunning, another pitcher.

“It’s never easy to let go of your prospects,” Nationals GM Mike Rizzo said. “You feel like a proud daddy when they get to the big leagues and it’s difficult to let ’em go. All three of those guys are high serving guys that have a bright future.”

Eaton is a career .284/.357/.414 hitter over five seasons with the White Sox and Diamondbacks, hitting 14 home runs in each of the past two seasons. He led the majors with 18 outfield assists last season, also leading the American League in triples for the second time in three seasons.

The price for Eaton was steep; Giolito has been considered one of the top prospects in the game the past couple years, while Lopez impressed the Nationals enough last season for them to put him on the postseason roster. Dunning was the 29th overall pick this year out of the University of Florida.

O’s GM Dan Duquette said the team’s fans have made clear their preference for the club to pass on the free-agent slugger.

“We told (Bautista’s) agent that we are not interested because our fans don’t like him,” Duquette said on Sportsnet Radio 590 The Fan.

A person with knowledge of the talks says the San Francisco Giants have agreed to trade righthander Chris Heston to the Seattle Mariners for a player to be named.

All-Star free-agent outfielder Ian Desmond and the Colorado Rockies have agreed to a $70 million, five-year contract, a source familiar with the negotiations said. Desmond hit .285 with 22 homers and 86 RBI this year in his lone season with Texas, earning his first All-Star trip since 2012.

Left-hander Jeff Locke has agreed to a one-year contract with the Miami Marlins worth $3,025,000, according to two people familiar with the negotiations.

In addition, the Marlins agreed to a $2.5 million, one-year contract with catcher A.J. Ellis and kept righthander Dustin McGowan for a $1.75 million, one-year

contract.
