Isles beat the Blues

-

Anders Lee’s second goal of the game with just over seven minutes remaining lifted the Islanders to a 3-2 victory over the St. Louis Blues on Thursday night at Barclays Center.

Lee’s go-ahead score on a slap shot came after Casey Cizikas won a faceoff in the Blues zone and sent the puck back to Lee, who rifled it past Allen with 7:18 left. Lee has seven goals in his last eight games.

John Tavares also scored and Thomas Greiss stopped 24 shots to help the Islanders improve their season-best stretch to 5-0-1.

l Torrey Mitchell scored twice and Phillip Danault, Artturi Lehkonen and Max Pacioretty had goals for the Montreal Canadiens in a 5-2 win over the visiting Devils.

Adam Henrique scored a goal and set up one by Taylor Hall for New Jersey, which ended a two-game winning streak. Montreal had a season-high 49 shots on Cory Schneider.

PONDS, SJU ROUT RAMS

Shamorie Ponds hit seven 3-pointers, finished with 26 points and nine assists — all career highs — and Federico Mussini scored 20 points on 7-of-9 shooting as St. John’s cruised to a 90-62 win over Fordham in Queens.

Ponds made 9 of 13 from the field, including 7-of-11 3-pointers, and had seven rebounds and four steals as St. John’s improved to 5-5.

VEGAS TRADEMARK ISSUE

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has denied the Vegas Golden Knights’ trademark application a little more than two weeks after the new NHL franchise unveiled its name and logo.

The office cites potential confusion with the team name for the College of Saint Rose in New York, which is also the Golden Knights.

The Las Vegas franchise is set to take the ice next season. NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said the league will formally respond by a June 7 deadline outlining why it believes the name should be registered “in co-existence” with that of Saint Rose “just as a number of other nicknames currently coexist in professional and college sports (particularly where there is no overlap as to the sport for which the nickname is being used).”

BAYLOR COACH SUES

Former Baylor football coach Art Briles sued three school regents and a vice president for libel and slander Thursday, accusing them of falsely stating he knew of reported assaults and alleged gang rapes by players and didn’t report them.

The lawsuit names Baylor regents Chairman Ronald Murff, board members J. Cary Gray and David Harper, and Baylor Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Reagan Ramsower.
