FURY AT COP BIG

Rape flap protest

- BY LAURA DIMON and LEONARD GREENE

EVERY VICTIM. Every time.

That was the message from dozens of women who gathered Tuesday outside Brooklyn’s 94th Precinct to protest an NYPD commander’s dismissive comments about rape.

Days after Capt. Peter Rose landed in hot water for suggesting at a community council meeting that some rapes aren’t as bad as others, he was lambasted by representatives of one of the nation’s largest women’s groups.

“We know from our work that this mentality is pervasive and Capt. Rose’s comments are symptoms of a larger problem,”said Jane Manning of the the National Organization for Women and Women’s Justice NOW.

With cops from the Greenpoint precinct looking on, protesters held signs that said, “Rape is always a crime,” and chanted, “Take rape seriously, every victim, every time.”

Rose spoke at a Jan. 4 community meeting about the precinct’s rise in rapes — from eight in 2015 to 13 last year.

Ten of the 13 are still unsolved, Rose said, reportedly suggesting it was because the victims had stopped cooperating with detectives. Manning, a former sex crimes prosecutor, said her group requested a meeting with Police Commissioner James O’Neill to discuss the issue, and urge the department to reopen the 10 cases, which were classified as acquaintance rapes.

Rose was quoted last week as saying sexual assaults in which women are attacked by men they know are “not total abomination rapes where strangers are being dragged off the streets.”

Rose later apologized.
