Dviolinist has found his voice. The 52-year-old musician just finished narrating the upcoming documentary “Father’s Kingdom,” about the controversial mid-20th century religious and civil rights leader Father Divine. And the rock star calls the voiceover project a dream come true.
“I thought, wow, this is cool,” Tinsley (photo) told us from his home in Virginia. According to Tinsley, director
heard him doing an interview about music and offered him the gig.
“Narrating is something I’ve always wanted to do,” he said. Tinsley said he was involved in poetry competitions in high school, but turned his attention toward other things as he got older.
Working with his new band Crystal Garden, which he plans to take on tour in March, is something new Tinsley is really enjoying as well.
“They’re a three-piece band that can really fill it out,” Tinsley said of his bandmates. He’s brought in legendary guitarist to jam with them on occasion. “The chemistry between the band has to be there,” he said. “It’s like with (the Dave Matthews Band) — the chemistry had to be there.”
Tinsley is glad to share his experience — and other things — with his new crew.
“They use my bus,” said Tinsley, who manages the band as well as playing. “I’m always out with them. I’ve done it before. I’ve been there and know what it’s all about. This is half the fun right here. It becomes something else — the ride to get here. They are enjoying the ride. It’s cool to know what is a big deal and what’s not a big deal.”
Tinsley also says that his boss Matthews, who’s currently on a tour with one other member of Dave Matthews Band, approves of his violinist’s new band.
