A silent Prez at D.C. church amid protests

- BY ADAM EDELMAN and LARRY McSHANE

in Washington AS HUNDREDS of thousands of protesters roared Saturday in the streets outside, a somber President Trump sat in silent prayer.

The new commander-in-chief, joined by First Lady Melania Trump, his family and Vice President Pence, was among those attending a traditional multifaith service in the Washington National Cathedral.

Trump did not speak during the 75-minute service, although he sang along with a rendition of “America the Beautiful” from his seat in the front pew.

He closed his eyes at times for lengthy periods — either in quiet reflection or to catch a quick breath after a whirlwind first 24 hours in power.

The event, held every four years after the inauguration, marked the final bit of transition business for Trump before his shift into running the nation.

Some in the Episcopal community blanched at holding the service for Trump due to his policies. But the event went off without a hitch or a voice of opposition, even as hundreds of thousands of anti-Trump demonstrators filled Washington.

Bishop Harry Jackson of Hope Christian Church in Beltsville, Md., asked God to grant the President, Vice President and their cabinet members “wisdom and grace in the exercise of their duties.”

Trump (inset with clergyman) and Pence, he added, should “serve all people of this nation and promote the dignity and freedom of every person.”

More than 25 clergy members from across the U.S. — representing nine faiths — paid their respects at the service.

The President entered the cathedral about 10:30 a.m. with the First Lady. Moments earlier, Pence and his wife, Karen, as well as Trump’s adult children and their spouses and children, entered.

The Right Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde, bishop of Washington, delivered the opening benediction before additional calls to prayer came from various reverends, cantors, rabbis, imams and priests — both Catholic and Hindu.
