Venus wins, in quarters

-

Venus Williams has returned to the quarterfinals for the ninth time at the Australian Open.

The 36-year-old, seven-time major winner had a 6-3, 7-5 fourthround win Sunday over No. 181-ranked Mona Barthel, who won three matches in qualifying and then beat two Australian wild cards and Olympic gold medalist Monica Puig in the first three rounds.

Williams will play No. 24-seeded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who beat No. 8 Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-3, 6-3 in the opening match of Day Seven at Rod Laver Arena.

VONN WINS

In just the second race of her comeback from a knee injury and a broken arm, Lindsey Vonn edged defending overall World Cup champion Lara Gut to win a downhill event in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, and claim career victory No. 77, moving her within nine wins of the all-time record.

Vonn broke her upper right arm 10 weeks ago in a training crash on Copper Mountain, Colorado, while recovering from a left knee injury that ended last season prematurely in February.

COLTS CAN GM

Colts owner Jim Irsay has fired general manager Ryan Grigson after five seasons.

The move comes after Indianapolis (8-8) missed the playoffs for the second consecutive season and only the third time since 2001. Irsay hired the up-and-coming Grigson after the Colts went 2-14 in 2011. With a series of shrewd moves and No. 1 overall pick Andrew Luck leading the way in 2012, the firsttime GM rebuilt almost overnight.

HADWIN SHOOTS 59

Adam Hadwin shot a 13-under 59 in the CareerBuilder Challenge for the ninth sub-60 round in PGA Tour history and the second in 10 days. He took the lead at 17-under 199 after starting the day in danger of missing the cut at 4 under.

The 29-year-old Canadian reached 13 under with a 7-foot birdie putt on the par-4 17th and got upand-down for par from just off the green on the par-4 18th at La Quinta Country Club in California.
