POLICE CALLED to a scene of possible revenge in Brooklyn shot a man to death Thursday after he pulled out a gun and fired on them, officials said.

A trio of plainclothes cops, assigned to the 75th Precinct’s anticrime squad, were patrolling near the Cypress Hills Houses after getting tipped that someone was looking to get revenge for a gang-related shooting from Saturday, NYPD Chief of Patrol Terence Monahan said at a press conference at the precinct stationhouse.

He said the team — a sergeant and two officers — arrived to see a man run out of the housing project.

The cops followed him in their car for about two blocks and then approached him on Logan St. in East New York, according to Monahan.

The sergeant and one officer got out of their car, and the man pulled out a revolver and opened fire, he said. The cops shot back.

“He let a lot of shots go,” a police source said of the still unidentified man.

The police then chased the man for two blocks, cornering him in a rear yard on Belmont Ave. near Logan St., Monahan said.

“One officer followed the suspect into the rear alley and confronted the suspect, who was still armed,” he said. “The officer fired at the suspect again . . . The suspect was struck and was pronounced dead at the scene.”

None of the officers were hit by gunfire, although two of the three went to Jamaica Hospital for observation, Monahan said.

Police recovered a .32-caliber revolver at the scene, according to Monahan.

Sources said a car was also seen speeding away from the scene, the sources said.

Miriam Espinal, 26, who lives about a half block away from the alley where the man fell, said she heard a barrage of gunshots, then saw people scatter in fear.

“I heard about six shots, and I saw someone outside looking scared.

“And then I looked outside and saw everyone running for their lives,” she said. “I heard more shots and quickly ran back inside.”

A woman who called 911 reported hearing 11 shots, according to police sources.

Though Monahan didn’t offer specifics on the Saturday attack, a 42-year-old man was shot in the arm and back in a seventh-floor stairwell in the Cypress Hills Houses. That victim survived.

A second man was arrested at Thursday’s shooting scene, police said. His role in the incident was not immediately clear.
